Being a native Northern Californian, I’ve been to Napa dozens of times and have inspected numerous properties throughout the Napa and Sonoma valleys. On my recent trip in May, I found a quaint, historic retreat right in downtown Napa. Converted from old historic mills along the river, Napa River Inn is the only luxury boutique hotel in the heart of Napa. We found it to provide a welcome respite after a day of wine tasting, while still being close to all sorts of shops, restaurants, art galleries, and cafes. We stayed in a Historic Deluxe room and were delighted to find a king-size canopy bed, fireplace, and old-fashioned clawfoot tub. In a town where new hotels seem to be going modern and contempory, Napa River Inn captured the old elegance and charm of Napa Valley effortlessly. It proved to be the perfect weekend getaway for us–and our wallets. Rates start at $199/midweek.

In December ‘07, Allison, a travel veteran of 21 years, escorted a group of 37 travelers. For many in the group, this was their first experience at an all-inclusive resort. Read on to learn more about their experience:

Overall, I really enjoyed this resort.. I thought it was beautiful, and extremely relaxing. Your first impression when you enter the lobby is that you are entering a very classy hotel.. But like all resorts, not everyone is the right match for this property. I have three children ages 5, 8, and 10 and we traveled with others ranging from 2-13.. This resort is very family friendly and offers many things for young ones to do. The size of the property is small compared to most and I liked that I could easily see my children at a glance. I spent many months reading Trip Advisor reviews and often thought.. if people were actually staying at the same place, as you would get such extreme opposite write-ups. But after being there, those that were unhappy… weren’t properly “matched ” with the right resort for THEM,

Dreams is an excellent choice for families or couples who like a quieter atmosphere, and don’t need a “Club Med” type of atmosphere, where there is constant entertainment.. The nightly entertainment was lacking, and was really my only major complaint. It was either boring, or just plain bad. Many people may not care about this facet of there vacation… but I do think they could provide a better quality of nightly entertainment, that you would enjoy after you have a wonderful dinner. They offer movies on the beach at 6:30pm, which is a great idea.. but I wished they would offer a second movie showing at about 9pm. That would have been fabulous.. The did offer a Mexican Fiesta one night and that had enjoyable entertainment, as well as one night they had a beach bonfire, with a duo that sang great class rock or folk songs… That was very enjoyable.. But those were the only two enjoyable entertainment options all week..

The food and restaurant variety was exceptional… better than any other all inclusive I have stayed at.. So if food is important to you,,you will not be disappointed. For Mexico… it was outstanding.. If you’re from New York City or some other major city with fabulous restaurants.. you just cannot compare the two.. But overall the food was great..

As far as the beach is concerned, I heard so much complaining in the reviews, that I thought it would be horrible. I thought the beach was beautiful and definitely swimmable. The sand does NOT feel like powder sugar, but is courser with coral mixed in.. but the water was warm and clear. The resort offered kayaking as catamaran rides, windsurfing, and snorkle equipment.. Also boogie boards. Some days there were pretty big waves.. which made it perfect for boogie boarding and some days the water was very calm making it perfect for snorkling.. About 200 yards out from the beach is a reef, with good snorkling. In our group, we saw sting rays, turtles, eels, barracuda, as well as many beautiful colored tropical fish and coral.

With regard to the rooms…. The original section is now called the “Hacienda” section, and the “new” section is called the “Dreams” section. The resort is very sensitve about referring to it as the “old” and the new”..because the “old” is not really old..it was completely remodeled last year.. We were upgraded into the newer section, in a gardenview junior suite.. The rooms were absolutely beautiful. I have no complaints whatsoever. They are large, modern, with big bathrooms with jacuzzi bathtubs.. I loved our room.. The Hacienda section has recently been completely remodeled, so they are nice also. They are a bit smaller, but have nice furnishings, bedding, etc. These rooms are more “Mexican” in decor with a lot of wrought iron and Mexican paintings, etc. They do not have a jacuzzi tub.. but they do have hammocks on the patios, which they do not have in the new section. The “Hacienda”section is a bit farther from the beach.. but closer to the lobby, spa and kids club…

All in our group enjoyed this resort very much and I would recommend this resort to many of my clients. If you are looking for a wild time with lots of entertainment… you may be bored at Dreams… but families and couples looking for an absolutely relaxing experience will find it at Dreams.
